Carly September walked with her hands in her pockets. Cape Town's icy winter was brutal, and this one looked like it wanted to break the record.

The hood of her jacket was pulled over her head concealing the headphones tucked into her ears. She liked listening to music during the walk home. It covered the constant stream of car engines and taxi hooters that drove her crazy.

Every day she bought a packet of one rand chips from the corner shop to eat on the way. She had to eat while she walked, or else when she got home her baby brother Keenan would grab the packet out of her hand and run to the safety of their mother's room where Carly couldn't do a thing to him.

She hated how her parents always took the brat's side. She had been there first after all. Since Keenan arrived she had become invisible. 

She kicked a crushed Coke can against the pavement, earning a disdainful glare from a man holding a digital video camera. She looked around in surprise. She had been so deep in thought that she didn't even notice the film crew taking over her street.
